Kinder Growth offers home-based DIRFloortime services across New Jersey for neurodivergent individuals, ages 1-21. Additionally, we provide DIRFloortime at a full-day, center-based program in North Jersey for children ages 1-6. DIR stands for Developmental, Individual Differences, Relationship-Based, and the practice of Floortime is a developmental approach, focused on social-emotional growth through play and emotional connections with people in your child's life. We observe and build a relationship with your child, follow their interests, and understand how and what your child is communicating in their own way, as we see all behavior as communication. We look to support your child's development in a respectful, playful, and meaningful way.
At Kinder Growth, DIRFloortime services are covered by NJ FamilyCare Medicaid, and in addition, services are also recently covered by Aetna Commercial. Your child would need a script (F84) in order to get the process started. A diagnosis under this code might include but is not limited to, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, etc. The script would need to state F84 (anywhere from F84.0-F84.9). The script must be signed by a medical doctor.
What is DIR Floortime?
The Developmental, Individual Differences, Relationship-based (DIR) model is a multi-faceted approach for neurodivergent individuals. The DIRFloortime model is what it sounds like! Below are 5 things to know about DIRFloortime!
- When we follow someone’s lead, it is like asking, “Tell me about what you are interested in? What kinds of things do you like to do?” and then letting them know we want to be part of it.
- We all have a lot to say without using words. This is done by using affect in our faces and bodies. If your child is non-verbal, or even if they use spoken language, we support the development of social-emotional communication by using fewer words and more expressive and genuine affect.
- There is no wrong way to play. Our goal is for your child to be interested in exploring the workings of the world with a friend. Play can be lining up cars, running around, or reading a book. We play our whole lives.
- Learning happens when you feel connected to yourself and others and become curious and engaged in how things feel, how they work, and begin thinking, “I wonder what’s going to happen next."
- Your relationship with your child is more important than anything. We invite you to be part of the growth mentality. With caregiver coaching, we support families in exploring where connection lies and what makes us all unique individuals.
DIRFloortime can be done anywhere at any time, all day, and every day! Learn more about our approach at Kinder Growth and how we empower children and young adults through connection, play, and joy!
